Thorndon CEVCP School carefully monitors the progress and attainment of all our pupils. This is achieved through having a robust assessment and tracking system, regular professional dialogues and termly Pupil Progress Meetings between the Class Teacher(s) and the Headteacher.

In addition to the monitoring described above, some children are also identified as being ‘vulnerable’ in relation to their academic and personal progress.  Currently we carry out additional monitoring of the following groups: disadvantaged pupils (those in receipt of free school meals now, or in the last six years), children with complex additional needs, late joiners and children from some minority groups.  Some children fall in to more than one of these groups

Pupil Premium

The Pupil Premium is allocated to children from low-income families who are currently known to be eligible for FSM or who have been eligible for FSM in the past six years.  Pupil Premium is also allocated to children who have been looked after (in the care of a Local Authority) .

Overview of Thorndon: 2016/17 Pupil Premium

The nature of support, access to provision and entitlement, and analysis of the impact of the Pupil Premium/Service Premium Grant is instigated and implemented by the teaching staff of the school and monitored by the Headteacher and Governing Body through the Learning and Attainment Committee.

Carefully planned and implemented focused intervention group work (teacher/TA led) for target children.

Additional support in the classroom through use of TA support linked to raising standards in reading and writing.

A programme of individual and small group tuition linked to specific need.

A programme of 2 to 1 extended timetabled teaching for focus pupils.

Resources purchased to enhance learning of target children including:

  • Numicom throughout the school,
  • Nessy, Hairy Phonics and Success Maker ICT programmes,
  • ICT equipment, 
  • Specific and focused games and activities to support pupils with dyslexia.

Access to specialist external support from Educational Psychologists, and support programmes such as Break. 

Access to extra-curricular clubs, residentials and activities to enhance life-skills, experiences and support pupils’ development of self-esteem.

Curriculum Focus of PPG 2016/2017

  • To improve the progress of pupils in disadvantaged groups.
  • To improve the way the progress of vulnerable and disadvantaged pupils is tracked, monitored and reported.
  • To raise standards in maths. 
  • To provide children with access to life-experiences and life skills.
  • To raise pupils self-esteem.
  • To continue to close the gap for disadvantaged pupils

Measuring The Impact

Short-Term Analysis of Impact

The teaching staff, in conjunction with the Headteacher/SENDCO regularly evaluates the impact of pupils accessing target intervention groups and 2:1 tuition. This ensures that our resources, including human resources, are well targeted.

Medium –Term Analysis of Impact

The impact of Pupil Premium provision is reviewed termly during the Pupil Progress Meetings undertaken between the Headteacher and Class Teacher. Analysis of each child’s progress and achievement is undertaken using the school’s tracking system. The governing body monitor all termly progress meetings and relevant data. 

Long-Term Analysis of Impact

The impact of Service/ Pupil Premium provision is also reviewed annually when the progress and attainment is analysed by the School and the Curriculum and Attainment Committee and reported to the Governing Body and the Local Authority, who subsequently submit the data to the DfE.
