Welcome and thank you for your interest in Thorndon CofE Primary School.
Thorndon Primary School is small, friendly, welcoming and inclusive village school for children aged 4 -11 years old. Located in the village of Thorndon, near Eye, for nearly 150 years the school has faithfully served the children and their families from the local community and surrounding area.
On 1st January 2023, the school converted to an academy and we are proud to be part of the All Saints Schools Trust (ASST). The ASST is comprised of twelve like-minded primary schools, whose ultimate aim is to ensure all of our children get the very best opportunities and education.
Over the years, the school has grown in size, with an extension to the original old Victorian building, so we have a large Early Years Foundation Stage classroom linked to the outside learning area and three further classrooms for Key Stage 1, Lower Key Stage 2 and Upper Key Stage 2. There is also a library, playground (with our ‘Cube’ building), school field and outdoor play equipment. The school has a lot of character and has recently been refurbished making our school a great place to learn!
We believe our school is a happy, “family school” with high expectations, is forward thinking and has a caring atmosphere and an exciting, challenging curriculum, but above all, a school that children really want to come to. We firmly believe working alongside our parents in partnership and parental involvement in the childrens' education is actively encouraged.
We expect high standards in everything we do and we believe in educating the whole child. We want every child to believe in themselves, and in each other, to inspire confidence and curiosity about the world around them. This belief enables everyone to achieve in a wide range of aspects and unlock the potential that every child has, whether it be academically, sporting, in the arts, socially, emotionally, culturally and spiritually.
We feel strongly that children should have opportunities to develop a wide range of skills and interests beyond the school curriculum. For example all children take part in our school productions, all children have Forest Schools sessions, Key Stage 2 have a weekly swimming lesson and Years 5 and 6 learn to play a musical instrument as part of the Whole School Ensemble Teaching programme. We also run a residential visit every year for those in Year 6.
Premier Education run our breakfast club every morning from 8am and some of the after school clubs too.
We have a strong, enthusiastic and committed staff team with a wide range of talents and a great deal of experience, dedicated Governors and Friends committee. Everyone works for the benefit of the children and the school, to provide the best education for all our children. The school also has positive links with the local community and other local schools. We have a very special relationship with the church, located next to the school.
Our intake for each year group is set at 12 pupils and we currently have 51 pupils on roll.
If you have a child in Years 1-6 and wish to apply for a place, then as an academy, the school deals with its own admissions and you will need to contact the school directly. However, if you are a new parent of a Reception aged child and thinking of sending your child to Thorndon Primary School in September, Suffolk County Council is responsible for Reception admissions to the school. Children are offered a full time place in a Reception class at the beginning of the academic year in which they have their 5th birthday.
